Barbara Jean Walker Obituary
Barbara Jean Walker

AGE: 71 • Wilmington

Barbara Jean Walker died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 22, 2015, at her home in Edgmoor Terrace in Wilmington, DE.

Barb was born January 3, 1944, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to the late Gene and Winona Antes of Hollidaysburg, PA. She was a 1961 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a 1969 graduate of Juniata College. Barb met the love of her life, M. Robert "Bob" Walker II at Juniata and was married to him for 44 years prior to his death in July of 2011.

For most of her career, Barbara taught high school English and literature at Mount Pleasant High School.

After retiring from teaching, Barb took classes in art, poetry, short stories and novels at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Wilmington. She also volunteered as an instructor at Osher for Great Conversations, an anthology of classic and contemporary selections of literature. She loved the dialogue with her colleagues about the literary works of Nietzsche, Locke and other great writers. Barb's passion was intellectual discourse about literature.

Travelling the Caribbean was one of Barb's favorite pleasures. Barb also enjoyed talking with her sons about professional sports - football, baseball, basketball and tennis. She loved attending her sons' and grandchildren's sporting events, cheering them on shamelessly. Barb looked forward to conversing about art with her brother Vic, playing games with her family, and spending time with her friends.

Barbara lived life on her terms. She was a strongly independent, intelligent woman who will be remembered for her keen intellect, her vast literary knowledge, and her unconditional loyalty and love for her family. Barb counted her family and friends as her greatest blessing.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey M. Walker, and his wife Alison, of Providence, Rhode Island; and Michael G. Walker, and his wife Jenn, of Millsboro, DE; her six grandchildren: Samantha, Sara, Mika, Maggie, Emma and Myles; her brother and sister-in-law Vic and Carol Antes of Kennett Square; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Judge James Horn of Lewes, DE.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 28th, from 9:00am to 10:00am followed by a memorial service at 10:00am at McCrery & Harra's Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will be held privately at Whitemarsh Memorial Park in Ambler, PA immediately following the memorial service.
