Bart Quaintance, a longtime resident of Brandywine Hundred, died on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Forwood Manor, his residence since August.

Bart was born in Lundale, West Virginia to Dr. Rupert and Bessie Sue Quaintance and was a 1942 graduate of Fishburne Military School, where he was a bugler. He went on to earn his B.A. in 1946 and his J.D. in 1950, both from Washington & Lee University where he played cornet in the band. A member of America's Greatest Generation, Bart served our country from 1946 to 1947 in the United States Army. Bart married Joyce McGuffin in 1948 at The Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Timber Ridge, VA and they began a long and happy life together, ultimately sharing almost 60 years of marriage. He started his professional career with American Viscose Corporation. In 1956, he began his distinguished 29 year career with the DuPont Company where he served in Waynesboro, VA; Seaford, DE; Chattanooga, TN; and Wilmington. His DuPont career focused on personnel and labor relations and he retired as Assistant Director in Management Development. He had extensive experience in human resources and was invited to be a guest lecturer at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. He also authored two employee matters publications - the 1976 publication of Exempt Salary Communications and the 1980 publication of Developing Supervisory Training. Bart was active in each community in which the family lived, serving while in Waynesboro in the Lions Club and the Lyndon Terrace Civic Association; and while in Wilmington on the former Alfred I. duPont School District PTA, including a term as President. He was a member of the: Virginia State Bar, Virginia State Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, Howard Rogers Legal Society, and Council on Union Free Environment (Chairman). A lifelong Presbyterian, Bart was a longtime member of Concord Presbyterian Church with a combined membership of over 50 years.

A true Southern gentleman of the old school, Bart is survived by 5 children: Deborah Cook; Douglas Quaintance (Terri); Nancy Nelles (David); Alan Quaintance (Meg) - all of Wilmington; and Richard Quaintance (Rob Bunsick) of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren: Victoria, Timothy (Emily), twins Rebecca and Elizabeth Cook; Robert (Angela) and Daniel Quaintance; Kelly Callahan (Patrick) and Meredith Allen (Jeff); and Morgan and Tyler Quaintance; and 2 great-granddaughters - Amelia and Lilly. Bart was preceded in death in 2008 by his wife Joyce; in 1971 by their son David; and in 2016 by his son-in-law David Cook.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Friday, April 28 at Concord Presbyterian Church, where friends may call after 10:00am, and a reception will be held in Fellowship Hall immediately following the funeral service. The interment will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, April 29 at the Quaintance family lot at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring the memory of Barton P.
