Hockessin, DE

Age, 94 of Hockessin, DE went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 9, 2015 at Heartland Hospice House. He was the son of Benjamin and Ruth Lewis of Bethlehem, PA.

Benjamin was born in Johnstown, PA. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Muhlenberg College in 1942. After graduation, Benjamin served in the US Army during WW11.

Following his service, he spent thirteen years at a Hercules operated U.S. Navy facility at Rocket Center, West Virginia where he worked on Research and Development and safety issues for the Polaris and Trident missile systems. He traveled to the Pacific Missile Base in Point Magu, CA to ensure the safety of the missile systems. He retired from Hercules, Inc. (Research Center) in 1983, where he had been a Division Manager for thirty-six years.

His memberships included the American Chemical Society, Certified Safety Professionals, American Ordnance Association, American Society of Safety, American Society of Industrial Security, Delaware Safety Council and Hercules Country Club. He was also a life-time member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and A.F. & A.M. in Liberal, Kansas (Fargo Lodge #300)

After his retirement, and the loss of his wife Mary, Ben did volunteer work at Christiana Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, the and worked as a grief counselor with the American Red Cross. He attended Faith Baptist Church.

His beloved wife, Mary (Zimmerman) Lewis predeceased him in1988. Ben was also predeceased by his infant son, Jeffrey. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Stormer and her husband John of Troy, Missouri; his son, Thomas Lewis and wife Mary Beth; his daughter, Mary Beth Rutter and husband David; his son, Matthew Lewis and his wife Susan, all of Wilmington. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Benjamin J. Lewis, Jeremey Lewis, Sarah Lewis, Kelly Simpson, Heather Mosca, Brad Lewis, Katie Shenk, Evan Lewis and Kyle Lewis. Also left to cherish his memory are 11 great-grandchildren.

Ben was an avid reader, he enjoyed listening to music of all genres, but most of all, loved watching his beloved Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies and the 76ers.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Heartland Hospice House and Christiana Care 6C for their support and care. In lieu of flowers we would appreciate donations in honor of his wife, Mary, to 100 W. 10th St., Suite 209, Wilmington. DE. 19801.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 on Tuesday September 15th at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, where friends are invited to greet the family after 11:00 am. Burial will be private.
