AGE: 87 • Wilmington, Del.

Bernie died on October 24, 2016 at Compassionate Care Hospice of St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware at the age of 87. He suffered from vascular dementia for over a decade and succumbed peacefully to his illness.

The only son of Albert and Betty Yemc, of Grand Haven, Michigan, Bernie graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1946 and went on to study at Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950. Following graduation, Bernie served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps before embarking on a 40-year career with the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company where he held several production management positions from locations in Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. He retired in 1993.

Bernie was active in his community. He served as a lay minister at the Church of the Holy Child, volunteered at St. Francis Hospital, was active in coaching children's sports, and was a long-term member of the DuPont Country Club.

Bernie had many interests, including a love of gardening, hiking, camping, fishing, crabbing, golf, tennis, badminton, and volleyball. Bernie enjoyed frequent travel during retirement.

Bernie met Mary Louise Kreidler in Sandusky, Ohio and they married in 1953. In addition to his wife Mary Lou, he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Jane ("Betty") Garzelloni of Nunica, MI; his four sons: Bernard (Barbara) of Newtown, CT, David (Nancy) of Annapolis, MD, William (Karen Pascale) of Wilmington, DE, and Thomas (Susan) of Long Beach, IN; 10 loving grandchildren (Peter, Theodore, Louisa, Andrew, Brian, Mark, Madeleine, Thomas, Rachael, Katherine); and one great-grandchild (Oliver). He is pre deceased by his parents and his only daughter (Anne Yemc Thomas).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at The Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation 1 hour prior to the mass at the church beginning at 10:00 am or on Thursday evening, November 3, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will follow the mass on Friday at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at The Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810 or to Compassionate Care Hospice of St. Francis Hospital, 701 Clayton St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
