Bette McNear Campbell Obituary
Bette McNear

Journalist, author, world traveler, and our dear mom, Bette McNear Campbell passed on to her next adventure on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

Bette was born on May 13, 1924 in PA, the daughter of the late Craig and Emma Hitchcock.

She began her journalism career as a Columnist for the St. Lawrence University Newspaper, the Scarlett Brownie in Canton, NY. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and Pi Delta Epsilon, a National Honorary Journalist Fraternity. In 1956 Bette founded the Hi Neighbor, a weekly newspaper in Cazenovia, NY. She then moved on to become Society Editor of the Albany Times Union. After several years in 1964, she took a position as Travel, Food and Women's Editor at the Wilmington News Journal. Stories of her adventures around the globe were staples for Delaware readers for many years. During this period, she wrote a book called the Kitchen Cut Up, a compilation of the favorite recipes of her food writing colleagues around the country. For many years she also wrote a weekly column for the Christian Science Monitor. She was a member of the Society of American Travel Writers.

In 1984 she retired and moved to her favorite travel destination in the world, the Island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. During her retirement there, she taught Calligraphy at the University of the Virgin Islands, and also worked part-time in the local newspaper. In 1990 she returned to Delaware to marry her long-time friend, Dr. Wells Campbell of Smyrna. Her final years were spent as the matriarch of a family consisting of many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was a very generous person who donated her money to various animal and orphan charities around the world.

She was truly one of a kind.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Wells Campbell; her son, Frank McNear and his wife, Pat of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; 2 daughters, Wendy Wright and her husband, Ray Holahan of Landenburg, PA, and Mary McDonough and her husband, Kevin of Blackbird, DE; her step-daughter, Charlotte Thompson of Hartly, DE; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, at 6 pm in the Westminster Village Assisted Living Building, located at 1175 McKee Rd. in Dover.

Burial will be privately held.

Our family especially would like to thank the entire staff at Westminster Village for their extraordinary and truly loving care of mom during this very difficult period.
