Betty Jo Grier Obituary
Betty Jo Grier

Glen Mills, PA

Betty Jo Banks Grier passed away quietly on April 20th at her home in Glen Mills, PA after a brief illness. She was formerly a resident of Wilmington, DE and Ocean City, NJ.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Betty Jo was the daughter of Dr. Edward H Banks and F. Mavin Lynch Banks. A 1948 graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in History, Betty Jo also held two Master's degrees from the same institution in Reading and in Education. Her professional career was spent in education, first teaching English to the foreign born in preparation for citizenship; then as an English teacher, Reading Specialist and SAT Prep teacher. She taught at Wilmington HS, Claymont HS and retired from Mt. Pleasant HS.

In retirement, Betty Jo volunteered as a docent at Hagley Mills, enjoyed travel, playing piano and bridge, but she most loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and large extended group of family and friends at her summer home in Ocean City, NJ. You could always find Betty Jo, better know at "Mimi" in her wicker chair on the front porch, with her cup of coffee and newspaper, ready to greet any and all who came to visit.

Betty Jo will be remembered for her intelligence and wit. A bright funny lady with a feisty spirit, who was genuinely interested in everything and everyone, she loved her NY Times crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, good books, great conversations, Sunday's with the Eagles and politics with Chris Matthews. Even in her final days, MSNBC was on constantly and she was completing crossword puzzles with her grandson in New York via Skype.

Always progressive, she opted to gift her body to science through the Human Gifts Registry. She is survived by her three children: Stephanie Grier Williams of Delran, NJ; Jane Grier Layman of Roanoke, VA; and Bauduy Robert Grier, Jr of San Diego, CA; and her 4 grandchildren: David Edward (Ted) Williams of Astoria, NY; Alison Leigh Williams of Los Angeles, CA; Elizabeth Banks Layman Burrows (Brandon) of Roanoke, VA; and Victoria Fraim Layman of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Banks Runkle and her husband Jack of Glen Mills, PA; as well as her long time companion Rodman "Rod" Gregg of Glen Mills, PA.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on April 28th at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road in Greenville, DE 19807. Visitation will be held in the church from 9:00-10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to: St. Patrick's Center, 107 East 14th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
