AGE: 84 • Rehoboth

Betty Sharp Prettyman, age 84, died peacefully on May 8, 2017, in Cadbury Health Center, Lewes, DE. She had lived there for three months following a stroke.

Betty graduated, with honors, from Georgetown High School in l950. After graduation, Betty was a legal secretary for Frederick P. Whitney. In l95l, she was married to Ralph M. Prettyman, the boy next door, and three years later she left employment to become an at-home mother. In 1971, she returned to work part-time, first as an insurance secretary and later to help in the family propane business, Clarence E. Sharp, Inc.

Betty lived the first 65 years of her life in Georgetown, with the exception of 52 summers in Rehoboth Beach. While living in Georgetown she was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, a homeroom mother for l8 teachers, a Brownie leader for several years, a Court Appointed Special Advocate for 4 years, and a volunteer at Stockley Center.

Writing was her hobby. When her children were young, she wrote a short story that Highlights for Children published. She also wrote Sussex County Footprints, a family story of growing up in Delaware's lower county, which was published in 2005.

In 1997, after her husband retired, they built a home in Rehoboth Beach where they have since resided. She was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, volunteered at the Food Basket, served as a mentor at the local elementary school, and rang the bell for the Salvation Army at Christmas time.

Betty was predeceased by her mother and father, Sara and Clarence Sharp, and her son, Hugh, who was killed in an automobile accident when he was l8 years old. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; daughter, Stephanie Smith and her husband, Dr. Robert D. Smith of Milford; son, Bennett Prettyman and his wife, Nancy L. Prettyman of Lewes; two grandsons, Daniel and Matthew Prettyman; and one granddaughter, Sara Smith.

A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Epworth United Methodist Church or to Vitas Hospice, Georgetown Professional Park, South Building, Suite 200, Georgetown, DE 19947.
