Beverley R. McQuilken Obituary
Beverley R. McQuilken

AGE: 89 • West Grove

Beverley Ross McQuilken, age 89, passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday September 11, 2016. She was born in 1926, daughter of the late Raymond Dudley Ross and Vivian (Guest) Ross.

Bev attended Jersey City Teachers College, majoring in chemistry, until she married her high school sweetheart, Joseph McQuilken, on February 27, 1946. She then became a Lab Assistant in the Department of Chemistry at Bucknell University where Joe attended college.

Beverley was a woman of devotion to her husband, her children, her extended family, her friends, her church, and her community. Wherever she saw a need, she went about doing her best to fill it. While her husband's career progressed with DuPont, Bev and Joe moved all over the country, seven times in all. When in New Jersey, as a new wife and young mother, she became the President of the PTA and joined the Women's Club. Joe was transferred to TN and there was no Cub Scout leader; Bev became that leader. In Chicago IL, Bev co-founded a Sheltered Workshop for mentally challenged citizens, was President of Newcomers Club. Bev and Joe volunteered countless hours, and served on dozens of committees belonging to churches each of these communities. The last thirty-four plus years were spent as active members of Hockessin United Methodist Church.

After raising her five children, Beverley went back to College at the University of Delaware. In May of 1979 she earned her BA degree graduating with honors. Bev loved sailing the Chesapeake Bay and traveling the world with her husband. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed gardening, had a passion for singing in the church choir, needed to dance, played bridge and tennis, loved entertaining her friends and taking numerous family reunion trips with her children and grandchildren. She was a stickler for correct grammar, and if she heard anything short of proper grammar, she was sure to offer prompt corrections.

Beverley is predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years, Joseph McQuilken, mother and father Vivian and Dudley Ross; her sister Diana Hayn. She is survived by her three sons, Bruce (Liz),Paul (Debbie),Scott (Kandi) two daughters Ann (Chuck), Carol (John) six grandchildren Michael (Adina),Christopher, Kyle (Kate),Marissa (Nate), Lane (Cameron), and Cole, great granddaughter (Charlotte) and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the nurses and caregivers of Ware and Willow Tree.

A Memorial Service will be held at, Hockessin United Methodist Church, 7250 Lancaster Pike Hockessin DE 19707 at 11:00AM Saturday September 24, 2016. A luncheon will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the , 240 N. James St., Suite 100A, Newport, DE 19804.
