Wilmington - Bruce D. Korant, 74, of Wilmington, DE, died at home on April 21, 2018. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Samuel and Rose Korant. Bruce graduated from James Madison High School, Brooklyn, NY, and from Brooklyn College with a B.S. in biology. He went on to earn a M.S. in Microbiology and PhD in Microbiology/Biophysics from Pennsylvania State University.

In 1969 he moved to Wilmington to begin his career with EI DuPont Co at the Experimental Station. His professional experiences were as a Staff Scientist and Group Leader in Virology, and as a Research Supervisor in Molecular Biology. From 1991 to 1998 he was a Research Fellow with DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals and from 1998 to 2001 a Research Fellow in Virology with DuPont Pharmaceuticals. Bruce was internationally recognized as an expert on viral proteases. During his scientific career he was inventor on ten patents, and author of sixty scientific publications.

After his retirement he continued his scientific pursuits as a volunteer with the Research Department at the duPont Hospital for Children logging many hours of research, and helping students and other staff members.

Dr. Korant is survived by his wife, Mary Anne, daughter, Deborah Murray (Michael), his two favorite grandchildren, Nathan and Abigail, his brother Arthur and two nieces and four nephews.

Bruce will be remembered by his family, friends and coworkers for his wonderful sense of humor and unique approach to life.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that contributions be made in Bruce's memory to the Nemours/Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children. Contributions should be mailed to: The Nemours Fund for Children's Health, Shands House, 1600 Rockland Rd, Wilmington, DE 19803.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Mount Pleasant Meeting House, 1009 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809 at 1:00 PM on May 20, 2018.
