Catherine Combacker Hughes Obituary
Catherine Combacker Hughes

AGE: 96 • Hockessin, Del.

Catherine Combacker Hughes died peacefully on July 6, 2016, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin. She was 96. She was the widow of the late John Ingram Hughes, her college sweetheart, who passed away in 2013 after nearly 70 years of devoted marriage. They made their home in Wilmington for the past 60 years, having been moved by the DuPont Company from West Virginia in 1950.

Catherine was born in 1920 in Osceola, Wisconsin to Dr. Leon Combacker and Mabel Amundson Combacker. Her father had an Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat practice in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where Catherine was raised.

Catherine attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1942, with a Bachelor of Music Education. After teaching for one year after graduation, John and Catherine were married in 1943 in Minneapolis and lived in Belle, West Virginia where John was working for the DuPont Company.

Catherine maintained a lifelong interest in music. She was a piano major in college, played the trombone in high school ensembles, and studied organ as well. She was an avid appreciator of music, and was very involved in the musical pursuits of her husband, John, an active clarinetist throughout his entire life. Catherine (nicknamed Cac) attended hundreds of concerts, ensembles, orchestras, and solos to support John.

Catherine was a 50+ year member of Silverside Church (Second Baptist), was a member of AAUW, and was a Girl Scout Leader for both of her daughters. Along with her husband, she was a founding member of the Skating Club of Wilmington and the Darley Swim Club. She traveled extensively with her husband and enjoyed ballroom dancing wherever they went. They spent 30 winters at their place in Marco Island, Florida.

She will be remembered as a devoted, loving, and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend, always taking an interest in all who knew her.

Catherine is survived by daughter, Martha Hughes Londergan and her husband Dr. Richard Londergan, daughter Nancy Hughes Robb and her husband George Robb, 3 grandchildren Dr. Casey Hughes Londergan and his wife Anne Pitts Londergan of Haverford, PA, Dr. Bevan Patrick Londergan of Jacksonville, FL, and Kelly Ingram Robb of San Francisco, CA, and 2 great-grandchildren William Hughes Londergan and Mae Cecile Londergan; and sister Alice Combacker Olson of Rochester, MN and her children Charles Olson of Whitewater, WI, Jamie Olson of Rochester, MN, and the late Sara Werner of Rochester, MN.

Special thanks for the loving care provided by the Staff of Cokesbury Village.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 1:30 PM at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will be private.
