Charles F. Lantz Obituary
Charles F. Lantz

AGE: 97 • Chadds Ford

On Saturday May 28, 2016 surrounded by his family in his Chadds Ford home, Charles F. Lantz at 97 passed away.

Born in Philadelphia, Charles graduated from Overbrook High. An accomplished musician on bass and piano, he actively pursued a career in music. His career was interrupted by his WWII service as a chief radio officer in the Merchant Marine. During his years at sea, he made the treacherous Murmansk Run across the North Atlantic twice for which he was eventually decorated by the Russian and American governments in ceremonies he attended in Washington at the Russian Embassy and in Moscow.

After WWII he returned to his music in Philadelphia. During those years, he played with local musicians as well as with big names including Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Xavier Cugat, and Ted Williams.

After their marriage Charles moved to Delaware with his wife Mary Francis while continuing as a professional musician part time. While living in Delaware he founded Centre Real Estate which he owned and operated for 25 years. Charles also became active in the North Wilmington business community serving multiple terms as president of the Naamans Rotary. During his more than 40-year tenure as a member he received many awards for his service in the Rotary, as well as being named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary.

After he retired, Charles and Mary Francis traveled extensively, visiting over 40 different countries until she passed in 2012. Together they raised and are survived by 3 children, Jay Lantz, Deborah Maxwell, and Charles Lantz III.

Memorial services will be held at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington at 3:00 pm on Thursday June 9, 2016 where friends may call beginning at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
