Charles Frank "Duke" Mitchell, Jr.

AGE: 83 • New Castle

Charles Frank "Duke" Mitchell, Jr., age 83, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and friends Sunday, November 29, 2015. Charlie proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a dedicated Wilmington police officer and sharpshooter. Charlie later retired from the News Journal. He was a 32nd degree Mason and past Master of the High Noon Lodge #38, Royal Arch Masons, Nur Shrine Temple and Worthy Patron of Caesar Rodney #8 O.E.S. Charlie enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, and watching horror and western movies. Most of all, Charlie cherished his family and treasured all the memories they made together including camping in Lewes and the annual family Hershey Park trip. Charlie was a great cook and will be lovingly remembered for establishing the family Christmas tradition of making kielbasa and Chrusciki.

Charlie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Louisa M. Mitchell; 4 children: Donna Mutchler (Jeff), Diane Griffiths (Luis), Charles Mitchell III (Dawn), and Kim Jamison (Matt); brother, Joe Mitchell (Bette); 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Soddy & Marian Limmina and Joe Walker. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Mitchell; and brother, Bob.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 4, 2015 from 6-8 PM with a Masonic and Eastern Star service being held at 7 PM in the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702. An additional viewing will be Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 9-10 AM at the funeral home followed by a service in celebration of Charlie's life at 10 AM.
