Charles R. Johnson, Jr., age 73, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.

A native Delawarean, Charles was born in Wilmington on November 24, 1942, and was the son of the late Charles R. Johnson, Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth (White) Johnson. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force and the Delaware Air National Guard. Charles made his career as a locomotive engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad (formerly Conrail), retiring after 40 years of dedicated employment.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Charles was a lifetime member of the NRA, the Brandywine Rod and Gun Club, the BLE and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was a passionate NASCAR fan and especially liked following Jeff Gordon. A devoted family man, Charles was always there for his loved ones. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be very dearly missed.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Judith E. (Curlett) Johnson; daughters, Terri Skorak and Susan Swan (John); sister, Doreen Laws; and grandchildren, Megan, Brian and Kaitlin.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday morning, August 17, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE, where a visitation will be held from 9 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in New St. Paul's Cemetery, Delaware City, DE.
