AGE: 85 • Chadds Ford, PA

Dr. D Peter Carlson died peacefully after a lengthy illness on December 12th at the age of 85. Peter was born in Red Wing, MN in 1931.He resided in Chadds Ford, PA for the past 30 years.

Peter earned his BS from the University of Minnesota and obtained his PhD in Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University in 1957. He spent his 38-year career as a research chemist with the DuPont Chemical Company in Wilmington, Delaware and Parkersburg, WV. Peter began investigating fluoropolymers in 1961, the beginning of meticulous studies resulting in over 40 patents and the commercialization of many important DuPont products.

Peter was a longtime member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Choir, Chorale Arts Delaware and the Mary Green Singers.

In 1956, Peter married Shirley Widdowson. During their 60 years together, they had four children: Jon (Agnes), Pete, Sandie Grieshaber (Nick), and Barbara Pauly (Roger) and six grandchildren: Magnus, Matthew, Trevor, Julia, Chloe, and Andrew. Peter is survived by one sister, Beverly Ekholm and was preceded in death by his mother, Sophia, and father, Henry. Peter's family and friends describe him as a modern-day hero who selflessly gave of his time, talent and unconditional love.

A visitation will be held on Friday, Dec 16th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. The funeral service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Sat, Dec 17th at 1:00 PM, with a reception to follow. Burial will be held privately.
