David Cortlandt Carter Obituary
David Cortlandt Carter

Margate City, NJ - Carter, David Cortlandt, 81, of Margate City passed away on June 10, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

David, son of the late Cortlandt and Emma Carter (Heaps), was born in Wilmington, DE, on April 9, 1937. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1955, and attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

He is survived by his four sons; David (Pamela) of Simsbury, CT, Brian (Lauren) of Moorestown, NJ, Christopher (Sally Jo) of Margate City, NJ, and Michael (Meredith) of Wayne, PA; 11 grandchildren; his wife Karen (Bishop), and her two children and three grandchildren.

He was a dedicated husband to Karen for over 25 years, and a proud "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren. David cherished his brothers, Richard (Peggy) Carter of Wilmington, DE, who he worked with for more than two decades, and the late Donald (Doris) Carter.

David began a four decade long career in pharmacy distribution in 1956 with Smith, Kline and French Inc. in Trenton, NJ, moving to its Wilmington division and ultimately its corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, rising through a variety of sales and management positions and eventually becoming president of The Drug House, Inc. David's leadership in the company, now Amerisource Bergen, occurred at a time of significant growth and transformation in the industry.

Following his long and successful career, the purpose of David's life changed with a sharper focus on community. A 25 year resident of Margate City, David served as Chairman of Atlantic County Crime Stoppers; a volunteer driver of the Margate senior citizen bus, and an appointed member of the Margate Planning Board. A man of quiet dignity, he will be remembered for his compassion and kindness to all those he met.

A service of Celebration will be held at the Margate Community Church on Friday, June 15, 2018, with visitation at 10:00 am immediately followed by a service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Margate Community Church, 8900 N. Ventnor Avenue, Margate City, NJ 08402. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, Linwood - Ventnor. Condolences may be extended to the family at ghwimberg.com.
