Delia Hennelly Obituary
Delia Hennelly

AGE: 94 • Wilmington

Delia Hennelly, age 94 peacefully went home to be with the Lord with family by her side on Tuesday, September 13, 2016.

Delia was born in Galway, Ireland on June 20, 1922, one of seven children of Julia and John Hennelly. In her early years, she emigrated to England where she found her life passion of taking care of people, especially babies while working in local hospitals. In 1961, she emigrated to Wilmington, Delaware and began her new life in America. Soon thereafter, she was employed by Mr. and Mrs. May of Centerville, Delaware as their nanny, cook and housekeeper, continuing her love of taking care of people. Delia stayed with the family for 30 plus years, retiring in 1992.

During her retirement she continued her passion of taking care of her friends and neighbors. Delia loved to prepare meals for people, especially baking bread, cakes, pies, trifle and brownies. She received so much pleasure by giving to people rather than receiving. Delia will be dearly missed by all she knew.

Delia is pre-deceased by her parents; her siblings: Nora, Martin, Patrick all of Galway, Ireland, Mary and Michael of Manchester, England and Thomas of Wilmington, Delaware; and her niece, Siobhan Hennelly Tanaka of California.

She is survived by her nieces, Julia Longworth, Maria Golden and Shelia Neighboures of Manchester, England, Geraldine Sheridan and Geraldine Burke of Galway, Ireland and Mary Hennelly Bomberger of Wilmington, Delaware; and various grandnieces and grandnephews. Delia is also survived by her sister in law, Eileen Hennelly (Martin) of Galway, Ireland.

The family would like to thank the ICU of St. Francis Hospital for their wonderful care of Delia during her short visit, The Hanley and The Kearny families for their loving affection, friendship and support during Delia's life, and her friends at Maplewood Apartments.

Visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington on Monday, September 19 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 4th Street and Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington on Tuesday, September 20 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Claymore Senior Center, 504 S. Clayton Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19805 or Catholic Charities, Diocese of Wilmington, 2601 W. 4th Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19805.
