Delia Maria Martinez (Maldonado)

AGE: 76 • Wilmington

Passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 of an Ischemic Stroke.

Delia was born in Torrecillas, (Morovis) Puerto Rico on August 26, 1939, daughter of the late Esteban and Maria (Marrero) Maldonado. She was a proud member of BlindSight Delaware, Delaware Association for the Blind, Landis Lodge, The National Federation of the Blind of Maryland, and attended Summer Programs at PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp in Mount Union, PA where she enjoyed activities with her sister for many years. Delia was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church since before she was married on October 27, 1957. She had a special devotion to La Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of her birth place. Delia began to go blind at the age of 30 from RP (retinitis pigmentosa) and was totally blind by age 50. Her disability never prevented her from living a full and active life. Above all, Delia was a loving woman, endlessly devoted to her family.

Delia was predeceased by her husband, Pablo Silva Martinez on April 4, 2000; her sister, Maria Delia Maldonado d.1938; her granddaughter, Christina Maria Martinez, d.1986; and grandson, Johnny Martinez, d.2006. She is survived by her children, Elva Martinez and her companion Mary Hogan, Belinda and her husband Brian Coady, Rose Mary and her husband Jim Miller, Edwin Martinez, Gloria Martinez and her fiancé Ismael "Izzi" Santiago, and Jacob Martinez and his wife Kelli (Galvin); grandchildren, Selina and husband Steven Heazlit, Patrick Christian Coady, MaryGrace Coady, and Julian Galvin Lawler; great-grandchildren, Joél Alejandro Heazlit and Hunter Steven Heazlit; siblings, Nilda Maldonado and Wilfredo Maldonado; nieces, Josie and Debbie; nephew, Henry Vega; and niece, "Dee Dee" Maldonado.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Delaware and Christiana Hospital Delaware for their loving and attentive care of Delia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1010 W 4th St in Wilmington, on Monday morning, October 12 at 11am. Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday morning, prior to mass, from 9:00-10:45am.
