Dominic "Pop Pop" Nardo Obituary
Dominic "Pop Pop" Nardo

AGE: 98 • Wilmington

April 10, 1917 - August 23, 2015 Dominic Nardo, 98, entered into eternal peace on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Ingleside Assisted Living in Wilmington. He passed away on the birthday of his late wife, Phyllis. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his loving family.

Dominic was born in Wilmington on April 10, 1917. He was a lifetime barber. In the 1940's, he and his father opened the first barbershop outside the city of Wilmington. The shop was located on Brandywine Boulevard in Bellefonte for forty years. He served in World War II as a 3rd class petty officer in the United States Navy. After his military service, he studied in New York City under famed hairdresser Vidal Sassoon. He later opened up his own beauty salon adjacent to the family barbershop. Dominic was proud of the home he built for his family on Woodside Avenue in Phillips Height. It was a labor of love, which took several years to build. He was a passionate world traveler. And his favorite pastime was studying, following and investing in the stock market. Dominic was most proud of his family. His love for his wife was unconditional. His children were his pride and joy. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept him young at heart and were the apples of his eye.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Phyllis; his brothers Frank and Phil Nardo; and his sister Theresa Papili.

Dominic is survived by his three loving children: Nancy Shepherd of Wilmington; Daniel Nardo and his wife Nancy of Glenmore, Pa; and Phyllis Nardo of Wilmington. He leaves his loving memories to his four grandchildren: Michael Shepherd and his wife Leilani of Wilmington; Aimee Shepherd of Wilmington; Kelly Nardo of Austin, Tx; and Michelle Nardo of Philadelphia, Pa. He is also survived by two adorning great-grandchildren Aonyae and Aryana Easterling, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Ingleside Assisted Living was Dominic's home for the past 8 years. The family would like to thank the staff, especially Deidre Rogers and Dwayne Lammers, for their care and support. Dominic touched many people's hearts. All are invited to join us in honoring his memory at a Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, August 29th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Helenas Catholic Church on Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington. The viewing will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Church. Following the Mass, he will be laid to rest in Cathedral Cemetery on Lancaster Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations are made to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Poplar Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
