Donald L. Farrar Obituary
Donald L. Farrar

Donald L. Farrar, age 88, of Wilmington, DE, died on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Seasons Hospice.

Born in Jackson, OH to Ora and Emma Farrar, Don was raised in a large, loving family on a working farm. He graduated from Jackson High School, received his BA/BS from Rio Grande College, his MA from Ohio State, and his EDD from Teacher's College at Columbia University. Don's career in education spanned more than 39 years, from his start as a bus driving, teaching principal in Cairo, OH, through various administrative positions in Marion and Euclid, OH, and a move to the old Alfred I duPont School District as Director of Elementary Education. His career culminated in his appointment as Assistant Superintendent of the Brandywine School District during the school desegregation process.

Don took a multi-faceted approach to life. In middle age, he honed his construction skills and built several cottages in Angola, DE. Always interested in alternative medicine, he had a reflexology and massage practice for many years. Shortly after retiring from the school district, he even taught accounting for several years at Widener. An active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, he was involved in their outreach effort with ministry to nursing homes and to the state hospital. Don was an accomplished pianist and organist. He relished the vacations he shared with his loving wife.

Don was predeceased by five brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lorena Farrar; two sons, Stephen (Lou Ann) of Atlanta, GA, and David (Donna) of Wilmington, DE; two sisters, Pauline Clark of Sebring, OH and Marie Stewart of Midway, OH; four grandchildren, Derik Farrar (Amity) of London, UK, Meg Seaton (Bruce) of Harrisburg, PA, Sarah Richards (Ryan) of Atlanta, GA, and Nathan Farrar (Rachel) of Wilmington, DE; and three great-grandchildren, Dexter, Brooks, and Annabel.

Don cherished his family and friends. His life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Monday, December 10th at 11 am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Dr, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713 or Aldersgate Church.
