Donald W. Illingworth Obituary
Donald W. Illingworth

AGE: 79 • Wilmington, Del.

Donald Illingworth, age 79, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully and at home surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born in Hartford, CT, to Ruth Newell Illingworth and Myles William Illingworth. As a young boy, his family moved to New London, CT where Don developed his love of sailing. After moving to Wilmington, he continued to sail the Chesapeake Bay until he decided to take up tennis. His "early bird" tennis buddies were very special to him. Don was also a stamp collector and spent many joyful hours with that hobby.

One of Don's favorite pastimes was playing the piano … for himself and for family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and an uncanny knack to remember jokes … even very bad ones! He loved taking care of his family and friends. You only had to ask Don to help you with something once and he was your mentor for life.

Other than being with his family, some of his favorite times were with the GNO/BNO group and their many trips to New York. Also, after remodeling a cottage on the Elk River, he and Carol added another group of wonderful friends in Hollywood Beach.

He taught English as a second language for several years starting in 1993 when he lived in Kennett Square and, from that, many more friends became part of his circle.

Don graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, with a degree in chemical engineering. He had a long career at Hercules Incorporated as Director of Corporate Insurance.

Don is survived by his wife and very best friend Carol Gibson Illingworth, his cherished and much loved children, son Mark of Tewksbury, MA; daughter Lin (Bill Maddocks) of Amherst, NH; and son Matthew (Ava) of Wilmington. He is also survived by a grandson Lincoln who has been the light of "Poppy's" life for the last seven years. In addition, he is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Don's wonderful life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 12:00 PM at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. After working in the corporate world his entire life, once Don retired, he never wanted to wear a suit and tie again! In honor of Don, please dress casual and comfortable.

Please, no flowers. If you choose, you can send donations to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, 1901 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, to the attention of Pam Jones; or to the .
