Dorothy G. Hannon Obituary
Dorothy G. Hannon

AGE: 85 • Wilmington

Dorothy was born to Aloysius and Loretta Gloekler in Pittsburgh, PA in 1930, and was raised there among her extended family, down the street from her grandparents and close to her aunts, uncles and cousins. She was always proud to say she was raised in Pittsburgh, and she graduated from Mount Mercy (now Carlow University) in Pittsburgh, and worked in Pittsburgh schools as a home ec teacher. Dottie met John through her brother, Larry, and they married in 1953. The two Hannon sons were born while they lived in Beaver, PA, and then John's job brought the family to Wilmington. John had to travel extensively throughout Europe for work, often away from home for 4-6 weeks at a time, and Dottie took care of the children and home herself, depending on good friends for assistance. Two daughters arrived to complete the family. Dottie enjoyed life and was a "people" person who never met a stranger, just friends she hadn't made yet, she was always up for an adventure, loved being a mom, and her children, grandchildren, and their friends thrived on this.

Service to others was always an important part of Dottie's life, and by volunteering she shared herself with others. She was a member of the St. Francis Hospital Junior Board since 1973, holding various Executive Board positions, working in the Hospital Gift Shop, and helping outpatients find their way through the Hospital for testing. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary and worked in Outreach, including captain of an Emmanuel Dining Room chili team for many years, was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout leader, and frequent chaperone on school trips and activities. After John retired, Dottie worked for several years in the Housewares Department at Strawbridges, enjoying "getting out among them," providing customer assistance and enjoying co-worker companionship.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband John in 2014, and her daughter Kathleen "Kitty" Hannon McKeown in 2000, along with her brother John "Jack", his wife Betty, and her sister-in-law Anne Gloekler. She is survived by her brother Larry Gloekler, and her children, Jay (Teri) Hannon, John "Blue" Hannon (Kathy), Mary L. Hannon, her son-in-law Joe McKeown, her grandsons Kevin (Jill) and Brian McKeown, and Steve (Sara) and Scott (Lindsay) Hannon. She was recently blessed with 2 great-grandchildren, Connor Scott Hannon and Addison Marie Hannon, with the anticipated arrival of McKeown great-grandchildren in December.

Dorothy had some difficult health challenges in recent years, but was able to stay in her home as she wished, thanks to her family's assistance, hospice and some wonderful caregivers, particularly Terri, who had shared short outings and adventures with Dottie.

Family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 1, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Newark Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Dorothy's name to Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Elm and Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY 14263.
