Dorothy (Holgate) Smith

AGE: 97 • Wilmington, DE

Dorothy (Holgate) Smith passed away peacefully on February 9, 2017 at the Forwood Manor assisted living facility, which was her residence since 2010. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware and is the daughter of Winifred and Harry Holgate. She was just a few days shy of reaching 98 years old.

Dorothy was the owner of Shon's Catering, serving businesses and families throughout Delaware for more than 35 years. During her career, Dorothy was the house caterer at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Maryland Avenue and the Monterey Club on Philadelphia Pike. She was a past president of St. Francis Hospital Junior Board, the Salvation Army Auxiliary, and a former treasurer for the Women's New Century Club in Wilmington. Dorothy also served on the Board of Directors for the Sellers Senior Center.

Her loving husband, John J. Smith, Sr. was a World War II veteran, who had a very distinguished law enforcement career as Chief of Police in Wilmington, New Castle County Sheriff, and U.S. Marshall for the State of Delaware. Mr. Smith died after 52 years of marriage to Dorothy in 1992.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kathleen Neill, a brother, George Holgate, a sister, Edith Plumline, and a grandson Drew Smith. She is survived by her two sons; Chip Smith and his wife Barbara of Bradenton, FL, Kevin Smith and his wife Judy of North Port FL, and her son-in-law Paul Neill, Sr. of Wilmington, DE. She is also survived by four grand-children; Paul Neill, Jr., Natalie Marchiani, Beth Lubin, and Todd Smith. Dorothy was the proud great-grandmother of seven; Amelia and Kathleen Marchiani; Parker, Owen and Madison Lubin; Brian Neill; and Emmitt Smith.

The family has planned a private service for Dorothy, and upon her wishes, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Sellers Senior Center.
