AGE: 74 • Hockessin

Douglas (Doug) Allen White, age 74, of Hockessin and Rehoboth., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday December 15, 2016.

Doug was born in Wilmington to the late Ruth and Lou White. He was a graduate of Dickinson High School and the University of Delaware. He retired from New Castle County where he worked as a tax assessor. He was a competitive long distance runner having completed 43 consecutive Boston Marathons and set numerous age group records. Over four decades Doug won numerous awards in a multitude of competitions. He was instrumental in the unprecedented growth and popularity of long distance running in the state of Delaware where he helped develop, assist, and provide leadership to a myriad of related-running events. Doug mentored countless athletes and was an inspiration to the running community.

He was a 2011 inductee in the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and also a member of the Pike Creek Valley Running Club Hall of Fame since 1985. In addition, Doug was avidly involved with hot rod automobiles and drag racing, having built both an award winning 1933 Chevy Sedan and 1941 Willy's Coupe.

He will be deeply missed by his loving family and numerous friends.

In addition to his parents, Doug is predeceased by his sisters; Eileen Keating and Christina DiVirgilio. He is survived by his wife Susan Thompson White; two daughters Caroline Elizabeth White of Colorado Springs, CO and Kimberly Ann Steenkamer (husband Michael) of Carlisle, PA; son Steven Douglas White (wife Barbara) of Havertown, PA; three granddaughters, Heather White, Emily Steenkamer, and Alida Steenkamer; grandson Adam Steenkamer; brother Louis C. White (wife Aneka); and sisters Carolina Tutt, and Pamela "Penny" Gallup (husband Rick).

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. A visitation will be held prior from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Interment will be private.
