Ebe Lynch Joseph Jr.

AGE: 81 • Smyrna

Ebe Lynch Joseph, Jr. passed away from a broken heart on July 6, 2016. His beloved "sweetie", Mary Lou passed, 8 months earlier, on Oct 6, 2015. He never recovered.

Ebe graduated from John Bassett Moore High School in 1952. He was a star basketball player and the first athlete from Smyrna to be named 1st team All State.

He met the love of his life, Mary Lou Verdon, in 1956 at Washington College. They married on November 24, 1956. They began their 60 years together in CR where he started his teaching career. He then accepted a math position in Smyrna where he remained until he retired in 1995. During his teaching career he was head of the math department, basketball coach from 1960-1969, teacher of the year in 1983, and was loved by many students.

Once retired, the two enjoyed traveling the country. New England was their favorite place to visit. Their last trip was made in June of 2015.

Ebe is preceded in death by his parents Ebe and Mabel Joseph and his wife Mary Lou. He is survived by his three girls, Karen Burke, Kelley Willoughby (Robert) and Kathi Moxley (fiancé JC). He has six grandchildren, John Burke and Erin Burke Newcomb (Larry), Nikki Willoughby Rigney (Daulton) and Jake Willoughby, and Kate Daye and Dylan Moxley. He has a great grandson Liam Newcomb and a great daughter due the end of July. He is also survived by his brother John Wayne Joseph (Diane).

Services will be private at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, his family has started a scholarship fund in their dad's name. Checks are to be made out to Smyrna School Distinct and mailed to Smyrna School District Office, c/o Ebe Joseph, 82 Monrovia Ave, Smyrna DE 19977.
