Edward P. Kennedy Obituary
Edward P. Kennedy

AGE: 88 • Newark

Edward (Ed) Patrick Kennedy of Newark, DE, born December 4, 1928 went home to his Lord on January 10, 2017 at the age of 88. He fought the fight against a very aggressive disease but passed peacefully surrounded by his family in his home. Ed was a very special man and if you had an opportunity to cross his path, you probably remember your encounter. He grew up in Tamaqua, a coal town in Pennsylvania, and was a high school football star. This earned him a full scholarship to Boston College where he continued his football career until he broke his neck in his junior year. It turned out to be a lucky break. His career as a pro football player was over and he went on to become a construction professional and was the General Superintendent of the project that built the approaches to the lower level of the George Washington bridge. As a natural born "people person" with a tremendous sales ability, he joined the E.I. DuPont company in 1964 in their explosives sales division. He became an expert in his field and was renowned as an authority when it came to under water demolition for tunnel and bridge construction. He was a proud member of the Beavers and the Moles organizations for the "Best of the Best" in the bridge and tunnel building industry. He retired from DuPont in 1988 after 24 years of service. After his retirement, he volunteered at Christiana Hospital transporting patients to and from procedures. What he really did was brighten their day. Ed always thought, "What would Jesus do?"

Ed was the son of Patrick and Adele (Sakusky) Kennedy and is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Thelma Elizabeth (Schade) Kennedy. He was blessed with four children; Kevin (Mary Alice) Kennedy, Susan (Rick) Lesch, Mark (Teresa) Kennedy, and Dianne (Martin) De Sousa. He also has 13 grandchildren; Erin Kennedy, Patrick (Kimberly) Kennedy, Connor Kennedy, Kelly (Derek) Smith, Kevin (Michelle) Lesch, Michael (Hannah) Lesch, Mark (Nicole) Lesch, Keith (Meg) Lesch, Matthew Kennedy, Allison (Nick) Harper, Rebecca De Sousa, Trevor De Sousa and Noah De Sousa. He was also blessed with 2 great grandchildren; Tyler Smith and Ryan Lesch. Ed is also survived by his sister, Patricia Regalis and has a nephew, Joseph (Tish) Regalis and two nieces, Mary Anne (George) Watsula and Sharon Regalis (deceased). Visitation will be held at Resurrection Parish, 3000 Videre Drive, Wilmington on Friday, January 20 from 10:30AM-12:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00PM. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ed may be made to , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org 1-800-822-6344).
