Eleanor D. Hughes Obituary
Eleanor D. Hughes

AGE: 69 • Hockessin

Eleanor D. (Macchia) Hughes, 69 of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, on Thursday, November 24, 2016.

Eleanor was born in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Dominic and Mary (Cappachione) Macchia. She was a graduate of West Catholic High School and upon graduation joined the convent in 1964 with the Sacred Heart of Cabrini. Eleanor served as a nun for 12 years, teaching in West Park, NY and ultimately Brooklyn, NY. She eventually moved back with her parents in Philadelphia, and went to work for the American Cancer Federation. It was through a work colleague that she met the love of her life, James Hughes. It was a match made in heaven. Eleanor and Jim were married in 1979 and his work with DuPont led them to Delaware in 1987. Eleanor joined St. John the Beloved School as a third grade teacher where she enjoyed a 24 year career, working with thousands of students and their families. Her dedication to teaching was only surpassed by her love for her family. Eleanor was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and dear friend. She will be deeply missed.

Eleanor was a talented cook. A skill she learned from her mother, and one that she passed on to her son, Stephen. Her expertise in the kitchen served as the focal point of countless family gatherings. She loved to host family and friends alike, whether for the holidays or her annual get together of St. John the Beloved teachers, past and present. She always went out of her way to help people, and made sure those around her were cared for deeply. In addition to her love of cooking, Eleanor enjoyed music, and was a talented singer. She was an avid reader and loved to travel with her family. Some of the most memorable family trips were to Italy, Hawaii and Germany.

Eleanor is survived by her son, Stephen and his wife, Jayne; her sister, Rosemary Bellano; her nieces and nephews, Lisa Soley (Tom); John Bellano (Lynne) and Denise Macchia; her grand- nieces and nephews, Shannon Soley, and Griffin, Payton, Tatum and Ivy Bellano.

In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Hughes, in 1999, and by her brother, Anthony Macchia; and her brother-in-law, Andy Bellano.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 4:00 - 7:00pm on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Friday, December 2, 2016 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Eleanor's family suggests making contributions in her memory to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Newark, DE 19713, or to St. John the Beloved School at the address listed above.
