Elizabeth Bell "Carlie" Levinson Obituary
Elizabeth (""Carlie"") Bell Levinson of Rockland, DE and Kennedyville, MD died on August 15, 2016, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 88.
Born in Ocean City, NJ, Carlie was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth and Robert K. Bell Sr. She graduated from The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA, Stephens College in Colombia, MO, and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
Carlie taught school at Episcopal Academy on the Philadelphia Main Line before marrying John Levinson in 1953. Soon after her marriage, Carlie and John moved to Wilmington, where John opened his obstetrics and gynecology practice and Carlie stayed home to raise their three children.
Carlie was known for her love of entertaining. Friends and family will remember her warm hospitality and well-stocked kitchen, full of everything from Pepperidge Farm cookies, potato chips, party mix, cut vegetables, ham, and eye roast. Carlie loved pretzels and everything chocolate.
As her children grew older, Carlie volunteered at Winterthur Museum, and later joined Winterthur as a member of the guiding staff. She was one of the guides who created Winterthur's first ""Yuletide,"" and in 2003 became a member of the Winterthur Quarter Century Club, in recognition of 25 years of dedicated and distinguished service. She was also a guide at Odessa, the Winterthur-owned historic homes. At Winterthur, Carlie was well known for her mentorship and training of new guides. Her expertise in rugs was highly acclaimed, and the focus of many of her travels to places such as Afghanistan.
In later years, Carlie and John spent time between Wilmington and their home in Kennedyville, MD. Carlie liked to walk near the water and spend time rowing. Like her husband, she was an intrepid traveler and was fortunate to have traveled to all seven continents.
Carlie was highly accomplished at needlepoint. Her needlepoint belts, stools, table tops, Christmas ornaments, pillows and wall hangings are cherished and loved by many.
Carlie was also a huge sports fan, tirelessly taking her sons and their friends to early morning hockey games at the Skating Club of Wilmington. She was a regular at Philadelphia Flyers games from their inception in 1968 and well through their glory days of the 1970's. She attended many, many Phillies and Orioles games over the years, and continued to follow all sports with her faithful Wilmington News Journal in later life.
Carlie was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, John M. Levinson, MD. Carlie is survived by their three children: Patricia Anne, of Mountain View, CA; John Carl (Ellen) of Southport, CT; Mark Jay (Frances) of Double Bay, Australia; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth (Ben), Jennifer, Cory, Chris, Remi, Maya, and Inca; one great granddaughter, Zoe Elise; and her beloved and dedicated caregiver and friend of later years, Kathy Puit.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Rockland Place, especially the staff in Pathways, as well as the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice.
A very small and private celebration of Carlie's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Yuletide program at Winterthur Museum, www.winterthur.org or the , www.alz.org.
