Elizabeth Gilmour Wakeman Obituary
Elizabeth Gilmour Wakeman

AGE: 98 • Newark

Elizabeth "Chum" Wakeman passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Christiana Hospital.

Elizabeth lost her beloved husband, Richard, just seven weeks ago, and after 74 years together, 53 days apart was too much. She was the daughter of Ernest K. and Sarieta Erwin Gilmour and was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 23, 1917. Chum graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia and West Chester State Teachers College in 1939. She met her husband during a bowling match where he questioned her score keeping abilities. The love of her life, Elizabeth and Richard were married in May 1942, immediately before Richard went overseas to WWII.

The Wakemans lived and raised their children in Huntingdon Valley, PA. During these years, Chum worked behind the scenes shuttling their kids to schools, sport practices and swim meets, where she continued to practice her score keeping talents. Chum used her teaching degree by substituting in the Lower Moreland schools. Her children were always "thrilled" to see her as their teacher for a day! There were lots of dinners at the pool with her famous apple pies! Richard's civilian career with the Army took him to Aberdeen Proving Ground, and the family to Newark, DE in 1970. They retired to Florida for 25 years and returned to Newark in 2012 to be close to their loving family.

In addition to Richard, Chum was preceded in death by her oldest son, Richard G. Wakeman. She is survived by her sons, Ernest G. (Donna), Andrew J. (Dona) and daughter Jane Altshuler (Steve); her daughter-in-law, Lorraine (Bosley) Wakeman; her nephews, Peter and Jon Masella; seven grandchildren, Jesse D. (Allison A.), Michael B., Kathryn C., Brian S., Matthew A. Altshuler, Kristen M. and Kyle G. Altshuler; and two great-granddaughters, Olivia Paige and Abigail Elizabeth Wakeman.

Elizabeth earned her nickname as Richard's "Chum" and as a dear friend to many. She was also her children's Chum, even when she displayed her determined personality and legendary stubbornness.

The Wakeman family would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Millcroft Assisted Living Facility for their attentive care - thank you.

Interment will be 2:00 pm, Thursday July 28, 2016 at the Delaware Veteran's Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear DE 19701.
