Elizabeth T. "Betty" Nurnberg Obituary
Elizabeth T. Nurnberg "Betty"

AGE: 91 • Hockessin

Age 91, longtime resident of Fairfax, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Summit Retirement Community.

Born in Wilmington, Betty was the daughter of the late Caroline R. (Eaton) and John J. Nurnberg. After attending Goldey-Beacom College of Business Administration, she worked for two years for the U.S. Treasury Department in War Bond promotions. She then joined the DuPont Company where she worked as an executive secretary for 33 years in the Engineering and Textile Fibers Departments until she retired in 1979. After retirement, she was associated with the Pot-Pour-Ri Furniture and Gift Shop from 1984 to 1993.

During Betty's time at DuPont, her love of the piano and singing lead her to be involved with many productions such as "Showboat Minstrels", and the "Fashion Show" all put on by the DuPont Engineering Department Employees Activities Association. She also performed with the Wilmington Music Commission as well as being a church organist for many years. In 1945, Betty was one of three young women chosen for the radio program "Blind Date" with Arlene Francis. "Blind Date" where three soldiers were to "talk" the three women into going on a date, was held in the Hotel DuPont Gold Ballroom in front of 700 Victory Bond buyers and broadcast to thousands in an unseen audience. The program was part of the Victory Bond Drive for the war effort.

Although Betty was the last of her immediate family, she is survived by a family of many dear friends, who will miss her greatly.

Friends are invited to visitation on Monday, April 25th between 5 and 7 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, 703 North Broom Street, Wilmington and again on Tuesday morning after 10:30 AM at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. (302) 652-5913
