Eric Sovde Obituary
Eric Sovde

AGE: 68 • Smyrna

Eric Sovde, age 68, of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away suddenly at Christiana hospital, Jan. 5, 2016.

Eric was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the late Gertrude E. and Luther B. Sovde. Despite a difficult beginning right at birth, and ongoing challenging disabilities, Eric lived a full and meaningful life. As a young man, in 1972, he participated as a sprinter in the third ever Special Olympics in Los Angeles, California. He was employed by Goodwill Industries. When he moved to Delaware, he worked at Elwyn Inc. in Wilmington. Upon retirement, he became an active volunteer with Mosaic in Delaware, his service agency, acting as greeter and all around "good-will ambassador" at various functions, as well as serving on Mosaic's human rights committee. A member of Families Speaking Up, he attended Disability Day, and the 25th anniversary celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He loved to help others at his senior program at Service Source.

Eric loved all kinds of music, meeting new people, dancing and parties. He liked to garden and ride horses. He enjoyed learning about different cultures, and sampling cuisine from all over the world. He possessed an impish sense of humor. He was a person of faith and attended church regularly. A self-taught artist, sharing his colorful artwork was a joy. Especially popular were his beautiful "star" drawings.

He will be sorely missed by the support staff, and by so many others who were dedicated and caring friends from Mosaic in Delaware. He was a most cherished brother and life-long friend to his sister, Lisa J. Elias (John), the sweetest uncle to his niece, Mya Elias Carney(Aaron), grand-nephew, Ian Vincent Carney, and nephew, Greer E. Elias (Betsy). Cousins Laurel Vollmar and Karin Knudsen, who were like sisters, mourn his passing, as does his loving extended family.

"Dwell in the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them." -Wm Shakespeare

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 501 Main St. Odessa, DE. on Feb. 6. 2016 at 1:00 P.M. Reception to follow. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eric's memory to: Mosaic in Delaware, 261 Chapman Rd. #201, Newark, DE.19702 or Homes for Life, 1106 Berkeley Road, Wilmington, DE.19807.
