Eugene Benson (Gene) Crawford Jr. Obituary
Eugene (Gene) Benson Crawford, Jr.

AGE: 90 • Greenville, Delaware

Eugene (Gene) Benson Crawford, Jr. of Greenville, Delaware, died on March 8, 2016, at the age of 90.

Gene was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, to the late Eugene Benson and Madge Abercrombie Crawford. Gene moved with his family to Greensboro, NC, and subsequently to Chapel Hill, NC, where he attended high school. After graduating at the age of 16, he attended the University of North Carolina (UNC) for a short time and then joined the U.S. Navy. When Gene was in the Navy, he was stationed in Dayton, OH, where he served time with a group now referred to as the Dayton Code Breakers. When his service ended, he returned to Chapel Hill and UNC, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1948.

After graduating from UNC, Gene began his career in hospital administration in Pinehurst, NC, and then moved with his wife and twin daughters to Chapel Hill to work with UNC Memorial Hospital. In 1966 he left his position as Director of Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He and his family moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he joined the Wilmington Medical Center as its Executive Director. During his tenure, Gene served as Vice President and Senior Vice President for Administration and helped the Center distinguish itself in its endeavors. He also aided the Medical Center in its major building and renovation program. He served as president of the Maryland/Delaware/Virginia/DC Hospital Association. Gene remained with the Medical Center until his retirement in 1987.

Gene was an avid golfer and member of the Wilmington Country Club where, much to his surprise and delight, he became a member of the WCC Hole-In-One Society in 1996. He and Virginia made many wonderful and lasting friends in Chapel Hill and Wilmington and enjoyed trips with them and family to various parts of the US and other countries, with one of his favorites being a golfing trip to play the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.

One of the greatest loves that Gene and Virginia shared was their alma mater, UNC, and both were life-long, devoted Tar Heels. Just before his death, he was delighted to watch UNC beat Duke in the final game of the 2015-2016 regular season. He also loved his time spent at Nags Head, NC, where he met Virginia on a blind date and spent many enjoyable vacations with his family and golfing trips with friends.

Of most importance to Gene was his wife of 66 years, the late Virginia Wilson Crawford; daughters, Beth Crawford of Wilmington, DE, Lane Crawford of CharlottesvIle, VA, and Ginna Crawford Murray and her husband, Scott, of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Maggie Cannon and her husband David, Michael Walkinshaw and his girlfriend, Amy, Paul Hurdle and his wife, Aviecse, Elizabeth Westfall and her husband, Chris, and Sandi Walkinshaw; and his eight great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Madge Crawford Street of Chillicothe, OH, and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Milo Abercrombie Crawford.

Gene Crawford was the quintessential southern gentleman. Anyone who came in contact with him was touched by his wonderful sense of humor, his story telling, and his respect for every human being who was blessed to know him. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Griswold Home Care and the nurses and doctors at Christiana Hospital for their care and service.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 100 and Buck Road Greenville, DE 19807 on Saturday, March 12th at 2:30pm. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to a .
