AGE: 90 • Newark

Eugene J. Shields, Jr., 90, of Newark, DE peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, March 31, 2016.

Gene was born into an Irish family on January 15, 1926, son of the late Eugene J. and Rose (McDade) Shields, and was raised in Elsmere. He received his early education at St. Thomas Grade School, and upon his graduation from Salesianum High School, Gene entered the United States Army during World War II and trained as a cannoneer at Fort Bragg. He was sent to Europe in December 1944 and served with the 754th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge from military service, Gene returned home to civilian life in 1946.

Gene spent the majority of his career in the beverage industry and retired from Delaware Importers, Inc. in January 1989. He was a devout Catholic and a faithful member of Parish of the Resurrection. He was a true gentleman who was well liked, easy going, approachable and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

His beloved wife of 54 years, Alice (Mitchell) Shields, passed away on June 17, 2004.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Maureen Kania, Kathleen Fretz and Eileen Murphy; his sons, Eugene Shields and James Shields; his sons-in-law, Paul Kania, Ken Fretz and Gene Murphy; and his daughters-in-law, Colleen Shields and Karen Shields. Gene was blessed with sixteen grandchildren, Jenny Maher (Steve), Joe Kania, Amy Verna (Rich), Clarke Kania, Kevin, Katie and Mackenzie Shields, Lauren Carrasco (Sean), Stephanie and Alicia Fretz, Gina, Kelly and James Shields, Kristin Murphy, Erin Gaughan (Ben) and Caitlyn Murphy; and eight great grandchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, Caroline, Aubrey, Desmond, Conor, Aria and Naomi.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, April 4 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Parish of the Resurrection, 3000 Videre Drive, Wilmington on Tuesday, April 5 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
