Eugene Wayne Martz, Jr.

AGE: 94 •

Eugene Wayne Martz, Jr. died peacefully on October 4, 2015 at the age of 94. Born in Flint, MI to Eugene W. and Ruth (Rettig) Martz, he was the oldest of their four children. He earned his degrees at Dartmouth College and New York University School of Medicine and did his first Internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, where he met his future bride, June Landry.

After serving as a Captain in the US Army during WWII, Wayne and his new wife lived in Madison, WI and Hanover, NH while he completed medical residencies before opening a private practice in Pittsburgh PA in 1952. He was highly regarded for his diagnostic abilities, and was routinely called upon to consult on difficult cases. He found his true calling in medical education. He worked as the Director of Medical Education at both St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh and Christiana Care in Wilmington, DE. He also taught at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. After retiring, Wayne went on to become the Executive Director of the Delaware Board of Medical Practice. Wayne remained active in the field of medicine all of his life and served as President of the Pennsylvania, the Delaware, and the American Heart Associations. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award and a Citation by the Medical Society of Delaware for his work as the Editor of the Delaware Medical Journal. The American College of Physicians gave him their Laureate Award, and Christiana Care bestowed upon him their Lifetime Achievement Commendation of Excellence Award in 2008.

Wayne is survived by his youngest sister, Janet Kraegel, his children, Catherine, David, Michael, and Ruth, thirteen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

A service in his memory will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 11:00am in the Alison Community Center at Jenner's Pond Retirement Community, 2000 Greenbriar Ln, West Grove, PA 19390. Donations may be made and mailed to the "Benevolent Care Fund" at this address.
