1929 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Evelyn "Jean" (Lake) James Obituary
Evelyn "Jean" (Lake) James

Jean passed away peacefully on September 10, 2016 at Somerford, where she had been a beloved resident since 2014. She had bravely battled Alzheimer's in her characteristically cheerful manner for 15 years. Jean was born in Hockessin on December 20, 1929, the oldest daughter of Charles William and Mabel Ebright Lake. For her first eight grades of schooling, she attended Hockessin School; a four-room schoolhouse. In 1947, she graduated from Conrad High School. Jean worked her entire life. She retired from Red Clay School District as a senior secretary. Not one to remain idle, she emerged from retirement to work part time in Dr. Donoho's office in Newark. All who knew and loved Jean will describe her as a woman of strong Christian faith. She was a 60+ year member of Marshallton United Methodist Church where she rarely missed a Sunday service. She belonged to the United Methodist Women and blessed other church members each week with her beautiful voice in the choir. As she received quiet comfort from her faith, she spread that joy to all she knew. Jean was an outgoing and lovable woman with an infectious smile who enjoyed friends and family her whole life. Jean was predeceased by her parents Charles and Mabel Lake, her brothers William Lake and Joseph Lake, and her husband Richard "Dale" James. She is survived by her daughter Judi Kirk from Worcester, MA, her son Jeffrey Kirk and his wife Sue from Wilmington, her two grandsons Christopher Kirk from Elkton and Brian Kirk from Wilmington, her sister Shirley Beebe from Roxana DE., and her stepson Steve Houghton and his wife Anne from Atlanta, GA. A viewing will be held on Saturday September 17 from 9:30-10:30 am with a service at 10:30 am at Marshallton United Methodist Church, 1105 Stanton Rd. Wilmington, DE 19808. Burial will follow in Hockessin Friends Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean's honor and memory can be made to Marshallton United Methodist Church, 1105 Stanton Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
