Florence Hottel Baker Obituary
Florence Hottel Baker

AGE: 94 • Millsboro, DE

Florence Hottel Baker, age 94, of Millsboro, DE, passed away on February 2, 2016 peacefully at Delaware Hospice in Milford, DE surrounded by her loving family after a long life of dedication to her family and service to her Lord through the United Methodist Church. She was born December 4, 1921in Allentown, PA, daughter of the late Rev. Titus and Kathryn Hottel and "Nana," her stepmother.

Mrs. Baker married Rev. David W. Baker, Sr. in 1940 and together they served many United Methodist parishes in Delaware and Maryland. Moving to the Millsboro area upon retirement, Rev. and Mrs. Baker became involved in Epworth U.M. Church in Rehoboth Beach where their son, Rev. Jonathan Baker was serving at the time. Rev. David Baker died Oct. 2009 after almost 69 years of marriage. Florence, who many called "Peaches," continued to be very active at Epworth singing in the choir and playing the piano. She last played a medley of hymns at Epworth in Dec. 2015, two days after her 94th birthday! Florence will perhaps be most remembered for her "Card Ministry," because she sent hundreds of cards to celebrate people's birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, baptisms, as well as prayer cards for people who were ill, facing surgery, and experiencing loss. It was her way of sharing God's love.

Florence was preceded in death by her brothers: Rev. Arthur Hottel and Rev. Timothy Hottel. She is survived by her three children: Sheryll B. Law and her husband, Gary W., of Selbyville, DE; David W. Baker, Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Seaford, DE; Jonathan E. Baker and his wife, Donna K. of The Villages, FL and currently missionaries in Congo, Africa; 6 grandchildren: Lorrie L. Tarr and her husband, Tim, of Middletown, DE, Michelle L. Shorter and her husband, Rechard of Newark, DE, David W. Baker, III and his wife, Natalie R., of Milford, DE, Amy Baker-Sheridan and her husband, Gerald J., of Dagsboro, DE, Matthew T. Baker and his wife, Ossis, of Fair Oaks, California, and Elizabeth B. Zlotkowski and her husband James, of Ocean View, DE; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and her nephew, Colonel David Hottel.

A Celebration of her Life and Ministry will be held on Saturday February 13, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE where friends may visit beginning at 12:00 PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, Epworth United Methodist Church at address noted above or to Barrett's Chapel Permanent Endowment Fund. 6362 Bay Street, Federica, DE 19946.
