AGE: 86 •

Sr. Frances Cabrini (Lucy) Fortugno died on Sunday, September 20, 2015, at St. Gertrude Monastery, Ridgely, Maryland, after a short illness. Born in Wilmington, DE, 86 years ago to Joseph and Mary Earo Fortugno, she was the youngest of their eleven children. A graduate of Ursuline Academy, Sister entered the Benedictine Sisters of Ridgely in 1949 and professed her Triennial vows in 1951. She furthered her education at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, and earned a BS in Elementary Education. As an educator in the primary grades for many years, Sister prepared hundreds of children for their First Communion. She taught at St. Elizabeth, Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Fatima Schools in Wilmington and at St. Edmond School in Rehoboth Beach, DE, before retiring. In her retirement she worked as an library aide in St. Elizabeth High School and as a faithful pastoral minister to the patients at the Hillside Nursing Home in Wilmington. In her later years she served as the sacristan in the monastery in Ridgely and was always ready and willing to give a helping hand when and where she was able. Fifteen minutes before she suffered her stroke on Labor Day, she led the Evening Praise with the Sisters.

She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters Jennie DiMedio, Angeline Maiorano, Helen Maiorano and Rose Beird as well as her six siblings who died in infancy. She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters, three nieces, ten nephews, nineteen great nieces, fifteen great nephews, ten great-grand nieces, ten great grand nephews and one great, great grand nephew.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 25, at Saint Gertrude's Monastery, with visitation between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. Interment in the community cemetery following Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benedictine Sisters' Retirement Fund, 14259 Benedictine Lane, Ridgely, MD 21660.
