Frances T. Horner Obituary


Frances T. Horner (Fran), of Claymont, DE Formerly of Scranton, PA died on January 4, 2016, at Crozer-Keystone Hospice Residence at Taylor Hospital

Upon graduation from Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA, Fran enrolled in the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She then worked for a time as a private duty nurse until enlisting in the U.S. Army during WWII. She served nearly 4 years as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, 11th Evacuation Hospital, and saw duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. She was a Bronze Star recipient.

After the war, Fran worked at the VA Hospital in Elsmere, DE and then at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester, PA until her retirement in 1981.

Fran was a long time parishioner of Holy Rosary Church in Claymont where she greatly enjoyed many years singing with the church choir. She was also a member of the Dupont Chorus and the .

Fran was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years Gilbert C. Horner; her parents James and Bertha Gilboy; her sister Mary Kapp; and her nephew John Francis Kapp.

She is survived by her three sons James, John (Rosemarie), and Robert; her sister Lourdes Mullen; three grandchildren Bethany Clifton (Brian), Liana Horner, and Melanie Horner; two great grandchildren Tate and Oliver; and nieces Sheila, Mary Lou, Anne, and Patricia; and nephews James and Robert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, January 9th, at 10am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Hwy, New Castle, DE.

Friends may call on Friday, January 8th, from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Fran's name to Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
