George Kamenakis Obituary
George Kamenakis

George Kamenakis of Pennsville, died suddenly on July 29, 2017 at his vacation home in Koutsouras, Crete (Greece). Born to Calliope (nee Kalantzakis) and Peter Kamenakis in Athens, Greece in 1938, he emigrated to the United States as a nineteen year old merchant marine, and settled in southern New Jersey. George was an engineer by trade, yet was extremely successful as a self-employed businessman whose work ethic was second-to-none.

George enjoyed balancing his time as a businessman with the role of father. He was a volunteer umpire with little league baseball in Pennsville, and for any Pennsville child who has ever played soccer, George was a founding member of Pennsville Youth Soccer and one of its original coaches. His love of soccer and the youth of Pennsville taught many boys and girls the true "beautiful" game, and some say there wouldn't be soccer in Pennsville without George.

George loved the music of his beloved Greece and often "entertained" family and friends with his loud singing, which often brought smiles to those around him. George's personality was truly infectious for those lucky enough to know him and be around him.

He retired from his store, Lampost Liquors in 2015 and enjoyed retirement tending to his yard and garden, and enjoying family and friends. George loved his former island home of Crete, and spent summers there with his beloved wife; swimming, relaxing, and spending time with family and friends.

George is preceded in death by his beloved son, Philip. He is survived by his loving wife, Efthimia (nee Pappas), his sister Marina Kamenakis, her husband Kinan Hreib and their two children Katherine and Alexander, George's son Peter and his wife Juli; as well as grandchildren George Paul, Michael, and Julianna.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the viewing at Ashcraft Funeral Home in Pennsville, Friday August 11, 7pm - 9pm. Funeral will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N Broom St, Wilmington, DE, Saturday, August 12 at 11:00am. May his memory be eternal.

Flowers are welcome, or donations can be made to Pennsville Visiting Nurses 14 N Broadway, Pennsville NJ 08070 or Pennsville Library 190 S Broadway, Pennsville, NJ 08070.
