Deacon George M. Taylor, Jr.

AGE: 78 • Wilmington

George M. Taylor, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the age of 78. He was born and raised in Wilmington, in the "Flats". He was the son of the late Amy I. (Miller) and George M. Taylor, Sr.

George graduated from Wilmington High School in 1955. He served his country in the U.S. Army Infantry in Germany for three years and then two years in the Special Forces. He was the owner/operator of George Taylor & Son Termite & Pest Control, Inc. for many years. At the same time, he founded Delaware Shotokan Karate that eventually became the University of Delaware Shotokan Karate Club. George touched so many lives in so many different capacities during his life on earth.

George was a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Wilmington. He was ordained in 1987 and assigned to his liturgical duties at St. John the Beloved Church. His ministry was as the Catholic Chaplain at Ferris School from 1987 to 1997. In 1997, he became the Catholic chaplain at Delaware Correctional Center in Smyrna. His next liturgical assignment was at the Cathedral of St. Peter in 1993. After 13 years at the Cathedral, he returned to St. John the Beloved until his retirement. He was also active in the Charismatic Renewal of the Diocese beginning in 1980 and the Legion of Mary.

George is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marie A. (Cresto) Taylor;

his three children and seven grandchildren: Daughter, Kimberly A. Taylor (Stephen, Brandon, Andrew & Michael Whitford), son, George M. Taylor, III (Alyssa Taylor & George M. "Ross" Taylor, IV) and son Daniel J. Taylor and his spouse, Debra Cantoni (Aaron James Taylor). George also leaves four great-grandchildren, Angelia Wickkiser, Xavier Brown, Randy Cordel and Ariana Brown.

George was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Taylor DeMasi and his grandson, Ryan Farabella.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit from 9:30am - 11:15am. Interment will be held privately with his family.

In lieu of flowers, the George's family requests donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. John the Beloved Church, at the address listed above. This organization generously helped many people during George's chaplain ministry.
