Gerald J. Grant Sr. Obituary
Gerald J. Grant Sr.

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

Gerald J. Grant Sr. died October 24, 2015 in Wilmington at age 90.

A lifelong Wilmingtonian, Gerry was born February 8, 1925, to Barbara C. (McElwee) and Daniel P. Grant. He graduated from St. Thomas Elementary School and Salesianum School.

Two weeks after graduating from high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Returning home after two years of service in Europe, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to enroll at the University of Delaware, hitchhiking to and from campus every day on his way toward earning a bachelor's degree in English.

Most of Gerry's professional life was spent at the DuPont Co., from where he retired in 1985 after 34 years working in the engineering and purchasing departments.

A longtime member of St. Matthew's Parish in Woodcrest, Gerry was president of St. Matthew's first parish council in the 1960s, served on several parish committees, taught religious education classes, and was a lector at Mass for 45 years, until 2010.

A strong supporter of Catholic education, he served on the Salesianum Alumni Association board, Padua Academy board, and the Diocese of Wilmington's board of education.

Gerry had an unwavering devotion to family and was an active participant in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid baseball fan, starting with the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1930s and '40s and continuing with the Phillies. He also cherished his daily newspaper, was a devoted crossword puzzler, and never let a bad pun go unspoken.

His wife of 58 years and grade-school sweetheart, Mary Jane, died in 2007. He is survived by their children: Jerry and wife Sheila, Joanne Cooke and husband Charlie, Jim and wife Pat, Katie McCabe, and Tom and wife Kateri.

"Pop" is survived by eight grandchildren: Theresa Petruziello (husband Mike), Jennifer Pugh (husband Chris), and Sheila, Christopher, Liza, Colleen, Michael, and Patrick Grant.

He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Raymond, Maddie and Sophie Petruziello and Lillian and Julia Pugh; as well as his brother-in-law Jim Thompson and wife Mary of Ave Maria, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Gerry was predeceased by his siblings: Eugene (died 1927), Daniel (1941), Barbara (1975) and Ann Koyne (2011).

The family wants to thank the staff of Arden Courts Memory Care Community for their care and support for Gerry during the past year and a half.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 1 from 3:00-5:00PM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 2 at 11:00AM at St. Matthew's Church, 901 E. Newport Pike (Maryland Avenue), Wilmington, DE 19804.
