AGE: 72 • Newark

Gerald R. "Jerry" Blakely, Jr., age 72, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 6, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Mildred C. and Gerald R. Blakely, Sr.

Jerry was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1963. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and also served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Before retiring, Jerry was a welder for Wilmington Sheet Metal Works. He was a parishioner at Holy Family Church, where he was the head usher and had attended daily mass.

Jerry was a devoted Poppop to his 2 grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He loved taking his grandchildren to lunch and out for car rides.

Jerry had a huge heart and a generosity for others that knew no bounds. He made every day fun and had the ability to get a laugh out of anyone he met. Jerry will also be remembered for his feisty spirit and quick wit.

Jerry was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Carol Ann, his parents and his brother, Franklin Blakely. He is survived by his daughter, Laurie A. Rush and her husband, Paul F.; his grandchildren, Paul and Miranda Rush; his brothers, Robert Blakely (Rose Marie); Rev. Leonard Blakely; and Donald Blakely; his sisters, Lorraine Zickefoose; Geraldine Davis (Robert); Bernadine Burkhard; and Judy Merrill; his sisters in law, Natalie Blakely and Donna Marioni; dear friends, Brenda and Holly Gray; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Jerry's goddaughter and niece, Shelly Gallo, for her loving care and support of Jerry and his family during his final days.

Family and friends may visit on Sunday, February 12 from 2 to 4 PM at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 13 at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE 19713. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
