AGE: 85 • Hockessin

Gilbert D. Rawlings, 85, of Hockessin, Delaware and Hilton Head Island, SC died of natural causes on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Freedom Village in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Mr. Rawlings is survived by his wife of 27 years Mary Schick Rawlings. His first wife, the late Barbara Hockman Rawlings, passed away in 1982.

He is also survived by three children and their spouses: Bruce D. Rawlings of Downingtown, PA, David J. Rawlings of Seattle WA, Diane Rawlings Film of Troy, NY and six grandchildren: Bryan, Matthew, Rebecca, and Christopher Rawlings and Aaron and Jacob Film and Mary's family, Diane Shell, niece, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and a great-niece, Sarah Newton. Gilbert retired from the DuPont Co. in 1990 as Research Associate at the textile research laboratory in Delaware. He was born in Annapolis, Maryland to Frank Truman Rawlings and Lillian Sears Rawlings, graduated from University of Maryland in Chemistry, and joined DuPont in Seaford, Delaware in 1951. His career in textiles spanned the early introduction of nylon and Dacron polyester to the mature Multi Billion Pound Synthetic Fiber Business. At Chestnut Run, he pioneered the original automatic wash/wear concept and developed products in many other fields including poly/cotton blends, resin treatments, fiberfill, false twist texturing, double knits, nylon parachutes, and nylon apparel.

In Delaware and Hilton Head he served many organizations including the Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, school PTA's, Audubon Society, Delaware Nature Society, Toastmasters, Community Concerts, Delaware and Hilton Head Camera Clubs and Westminster Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed travel and was an avid nature photographer showing his work in various exhibitions and venues.
