Helen E. Mahaffy Obituary
Helen E. Mahaffy

AGE: 103 • Wilmington

Helen E. Mahaffy passed away peacefully in the Healthcare Center in Stonegates, Greenville, DE, on Monday, February 20, 2017, one month after her 103rd birthday. Helen was born on January 20, 1914, in Wilmington, DE, to Mary P. McAdams and Raymond N. McAdams. She attended and graduated from Tower Hill School in 1932 (where she met her future husband) and later Bradford Junior College, North Andover, MA, in 1936. After the end of World War II, Helen reconnected with her classmate from Tower Hill, Henry A. (Hank) Mahaffy, and they were married in August 1948. In January 1953, the family moved to Hawaii when United Airlines transferred her husband there. Helen loved Hawaii and the friendships she and Hank made there. Some many years later when Hank was transferred back to the mainland, they continued to keep a residence in Honolulu where they would spend six months of the year. Helen loved to travel, and as the wife of an airline employee she was able to travel frequently. Her favorite destination was Switzerland. Closer to home in Greenville, she loved to spend time at the Mahaffy family cottage in Rehoboth Beach, DE, where the family would gather in the summer and later whenever possible. In the afternoon she loved to sit on the deck in the sun and watch the ocean. Many happy memories were made at the cottage. Helen and Hank returned to Greenville, DE, after Hank retired. They moved into a cottage at Sronegates as original owners. Eventually, after Hank had passed away and she had become older, Helen gave up the cottage, moved into an apartment there, and then into the Healthcare Center where she lived for the remainder of her years. Helen is survived by her three sons, Raymond F. Mahaffy (Sheila), Robert L. Mahaffy (Marilyn), and Donald H. Mahaffy, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was so fortunate to have Kelly Sipple, her assistant, caring companion and friend, who we cannot thank enough. Arrangements for a memorial at a later date are pending.
