Helen Margaret (Alfree) McCafferty Obituary
Helen Margaret (Alfree) McCafferty

AGE: 95 • New Castle

Went home to the Lord on Monday, February 8th, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. An amazing wife, mother and grandmother whom will be sadly missed.

Born in New Castle to Frank and Abby(Sharp) Alfree on Sept. 29 1920, Helen was one of 11 siblings. Helen spent many childhood years in Old New Castle, where she made many lifelong friends. At age 15, Helen met the love of her life, Felix McCafferty. They married a year later at age 16. Felix was an amazing man, and they remained married 62 years until his passing in 1999. Helen was a home maker and devoted mother for many years, before starting work with the colonial school district, and retiring after 15 years of dedicated service. She was known to have an impeccable home, beautiful yard, and was truly the matriarch of her family. Helen spent many years hosting great family parties. She also loved being part of the family ladies card club, and enjoyed many trips with her children to Wildwood in the summers. Once she became a grandmother to her 8 grandchildren, her life was then changed. She spent endless hours with the grandkids; she loved shopping with them, she enjoyed taking them on trips, and endless hours in the back yard just being a great grandmother. She spoiled each one of the grandkids and spent many years having big Easter egg hunts that the kids all loved so much. She would shop endlessly at Christmas time spoiling each and every grandchild. When they purchased a vacation home in Lewes, she spent every weekend making another beautiful home for the family. There were many memories made down the beach. Anyone who visited at the beach was entertained and left with great memories. Helen also had 19 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren which she loved dearly and so proudly told everyone she met about her big family.

Helen was proceeded in death by her husband, of 62 years, Felix, her parents, siblings, her daughters; Patricia Wright, Joyce Fuller and husband Bobbie; her granddaughters, Colleen Andes and Kelly Scott (Cox).

She is survived by her son, Francis and wife, Marie, of Florida and daughter, Helen Cox and husband, Harry of New Castle, her many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen was a devoted member of St. Peter's the apostle church in New Castle, always to be seen in the very front pew at every mass. She was a member of both St. Gabriel's club where she loved playing shuffleboard and St Anthony's clubs in New Castle, where she loved seeing all her lifelong friends and would likely be the first one to hit the dance floor, where you'd likely see her showing off her sexy legs!

Anyone who knew Helen knows that her life was devoted to her family, yet she found time to do for so many. She was the most giving women. Everyone who crossed her path loved her and are guaranteed to having a loving memory or funny story to tell. How blessed we all were to have her in our lives for so many years. She was one of the most amazing women, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all.

We would like to thank compassionate care hospice and the Eucharistic ministry of St. Peter's church for all your care. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Peters the apostle church-work force.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thurs, Feb11 at 11:00am at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 5th and Harmony St., New Castle, DE 19720. Friends may call at the church from 9:30am-11:00am. Interment will be held in the adjoining cemetery.
