Henry Schaefer Obituary
Henry Schaefer

AGE: 98 • Hartly, DE

Henry Schaefer, age 98, of Hartly, DE passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 in the comfort of his home. Henry, the teacher, theologian, traveler, servant of God, dog lover and Patriarch of his family, was born in Pittsburg, PA. He was a graduate of Dayton University in Ohio and in 1957 he moved his family to DE. He touched many minds as a Latin and History teacher at Dickinson High School and later at Goldey-Beacon College. He worked during the summer months as a gun slinging actor at Frontier Town. He utilized his dramatic skills, directing several stage plays in the area. Henry continued to humbly serve in life as a prison minister at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, DE and led a youth Bible Study at Immaculate Conception Church in Marydel, MD. He devoted much of his life to the Catholic Church and had an impressive ingenuity for translating the teachings. Henry had a high interest in every culture, expressing this by traveling the world. He passed on this passion, amongst many to his children. He took his last international trip 20 years ago to Italy, following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi during his pilgrimage to Rome. He also believed in dedicating time and money to many non-profit organizations, most recently as a weekly volunteer for the local Meals on Wheels. Henry is dearly missed and survived by his devoted daughter Karen, 66, granddaughters Shawna, 44, Mandy 39, and great grandchildren Sierra, 21, Lucian, 5 and Liam 2 ½. Services to honor Henry will be held during mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Marydel, MD on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 11:00 am. Burial will be held at 2pm at All Saints Cemetery in Newark, DE, where he will be placed beside his immensely beloved wife, Harriet. The family kindly asks in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Church or a local charity in Henry's name. To share memories and condolences please visit, www.fleegle andhelfenbein.com.
