Maj. Ira C. Lunt

Major Ira C. Lunt, age 78, of New Castle, DE passed away on February 18, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Jessie Lunt and his sister, Ruth C. Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Lunt; his children, Cynthia Fryer and her husband Glenn, Kathryn Lehman and her husband Keith, Christiane Schulze and her husband Christopher, and his son, Thomas Lunt. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Emilie Schulze, Danielle Winterbottom and her husband Mark, Justin Lehman, Autumn Peterson, Rebecca Schulze, Stephen Schulze, Gabriella Lunt and Joshua Lunt.

Ira was a 1956 graduate of William Penn High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nebraska and his Masters from Ball State University. He served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years and was very proud of his service to his country. He began his Air Force career as a Navigator on B-52 bombers. He served his country in many places around the world and truly loved his time in the Air Force. His two greatest loves were his family and his country.

After he retired from the Air Force in 1979, he became a school teacher in Colonial School District. He taught for almost 20 years at New Castle Middle School. He also taught night school at James H. Groves High School for many years.

He and his wife Margaret (Peggy) enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Kissimmee, Florida. He was an avid Disney fan and loved spending his time at Disneyworld or on Disney Cruises.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at New Castle United Methodist Church, 510 Delaware Street, New Castle, DE 19270. Visitation will be at the church from 10 am to 11 am followed by the service at 11 am. Burial will be in the Glebe Cemetery in New Castle immediately following the service.

Flowers are welcome, or he would also love donations sent to New Castle United Methodist Church (510 Delaware Street, New Castle, DE 19720) in his memory. He was a 60+ year member of the church and truly loved that church.
