Irvin Stone Lieberman Obituary
Irvin Stone Lieberman

Kennett Square, PA - Irvin Stone Lieberman age 82 of Kennett Square, PA passed away at Neighborhood Health Hospice on December 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on August 6, 1936 he was the son of the late Dr. Louis Lieberman and Minerva (Buchecker) Lieberman. He attended Lower Merion High School and was a proud graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Irvin received many awards at Penn for his athletic prowess including All- American in lacrosse. Irvin started his business career in Philadelphia in trade association management. He soon became very active in the Chester County Republican Party. Irvin was so passionate about politics that he was soon appointed to work in Harrisburg for the House of Representatives Republican caucus. In Harrisburg, Irvin became friends with then State Senator John H. Ware (later to become federal congressman and renowned Oxford philanthropist) who brokered a deal in 1970 for Irvin to buy his newspaper holdings including the Oxford Press (now the Chester County Press) and Main Line Chronicle along with many other community titles. From there Irvin began a 25-year career as a newspaper publisher and journalist. He and his newspapers became influential as a critic of local government and a champion of the First Amendment. After selling the newspapers to his two sons Andrew and Randall in 1993, he continued as a columnist in the Chester County Press under the handle Uncle Irv.

Irvin was true family man who loved going to the Henlopen Acres, DE beach club with his family and boating and fishing with his grandsons and daughters. He also loved talking with friends about politics and Philadelphia professional sports teams. Irvin especially enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Eagles with his family every Sunday.

Irvin is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years Judy Hartle Lieberman, his sons Randall Lieberman and wife Amy McDowell Lieberman and Andrew Lieberman and wife Ruth Posnak Lieberman; grandchildren Tara Lieberman, Avery Lieberman Eaton (Daniel), Benjamin Lieberman and Stone Lieberman and great-granddaughter Violet Eaton. His favorite dog Leo and several new and lifelong friends.

A service in celebration of Irvin's life will be held on Wednesday, January 16 at 11 am at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 316 Kennett Pike, Kennett Square, PA 19348, friends and family may visit from 10 - 11 am.
