AGE: 100 • Wilmington, Delaware

J. Preston McCarthy, age 100, died on March 2, 2016 at Forwood Manor Nursing Center. Preston was born in 1915 in Seattle, WA, the son of the late Winfred (Roy) and Therese (Tess) Preston McCarthy.

Preston grew up in Minneapolis and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Following the war, he began a thirty-two year career in banking at Equitable Security Trust Company / Bank of Delaware retiring in 1977 as a Senior Vice President in the Trust Department. Upon retirement, he moved from Wilmington to Millsboro, DE. He and his wife, Ethel, moved back to Wilmington to reside at Forwood Manor in 2004.

A life-long swimmer, Preston was part of the group that started High Point Swim Club. He was also a talented amateur artist and enjoyed sailing and listening to classical music. A devoted reader, he served on the Board of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library in his retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Steele and his first wife Ann Berry Giddings, his sister Mary McCarthy and brothers Kevin and Sheridan McCarthy. He is survived by his sons Michael (Joann) of Brevard, NC and John of Fishersville, VA.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Forwood Manor for their gracious and loving care of Preston. He considered the staff his friends and not caretakers.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, 226 Rehoboth Beach Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
