James Bayard Davis, Jr.

AGE: 71 • Wilmington

James Bayard Davis, Jr., age 71, of Wilmington, DE passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 28, 2015.

Jim was born in Salisbury, MD on September 18, 1943, son of the late James Bayard, Sr. and Mabel Perdue Davis. A 1965 graduate of Goldey-Beacom College, he was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served our country during the Vietnam War.

Jim had a successful career, which spanned more than 40 years, in the property and casualty insurance industry in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. He served as president of Delaware Mutual Insurance Company, Vice President of Delaware Atlantic Insurance Company, and retired from Donegal Insurance Group in 2007. In addition, Jim was a member of the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors, and served on the boards of directors of Delaware Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association and Delaware Fair Access to Insurance Plan.

Jim was an active member for more than 20 years of Lions Clubs International and was a past president of the Brookside Lions Club. He was also an active member for more than 15 years of Rotary International, a charter member and past president of the Hockessin/Pike Creek Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. Jim was a charter member of the Elks Lodge in Chestertown, MD, as well as a member of the American Legion and Buckingham Presbyterian Church, both in Berlin, MD.

Jim possessed a keen interest in current events and sincere fondness for conversation and the world of ideas. A true gentleman and loving husband, he enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife and best friend, Sue, throughout their marriage and particularly during their retirement years. Driving about Europe, hiking, savoring fine cuisine and Paris were always special favorites.

He will be remembered lovingly and respectfully for his integrity, kindness, optimism, smile and genuine zest for life.

Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susan E. Ayres Davis; his sisters, Mary Lou Kemp (George) and Ann Davis Lagos (Bill); his brother, John Perdue Davis (Ann); and five nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church - Christiana Hundred, 505 Buck Road, Wilmington, DE 19807 on Friday, September 18 at 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Astra Zeneca of the , 110 West Laurel Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19012.
