James Clifford Scarbrough, Sr.

AGE: 85 • Hockessin

James Clifford Scarbrough, Sr, 85, died peacefully on June 9, 2017 at Regal Heights in Hockessin, DE. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years Bettye Oliver Scarbrough, daughters Rhonda (Jacob) Mullins of Newark, DE, Johnnie (Allen) Groves of Maryville TN, Doni (David) Jordan of Columbia, SC and son, James (Tori) Scarbrough, Jr. of Newark, DE and grandchildren, Lenora Spence, Heather Groves, Crystal Richards, Jacob Mullins and Morgan and Taran Scarbrough along with great grandchildren Madison Spence, Chloe, Cayla and Cayce Richards and Emma and Lily Mullins. He also leaves nephew Mike Oliver and niece Deborah Julian. He was predeceased by a sister Hilda Rae Oliver and an infant brother.

Cliff was born in Thomasville, Al, the son of John Vernon Scarbrough and Lois Drinkard Scarbrough. Cliff joined the US Army in 1948 and after tours in Korea, Texas, Kansas, Washington, Nevada, Panama Canal Zone, Germany and Vietnam, he retired as a Sergeant Major from the US Army at West Point, NY after more than 20 years of service. He and Bettye then attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, NC and were appointed by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board to serve in Belize, Central America where they served for 15 years. During their time on the mission field, they started 8 churches with the Maya Indians, 4 churches with the Creole, and built 2 retreat and training centers plus 8 permanent churches. A high school was built in Belmopan after their retirement and was named in their honor.

After returning to the U.S., Clifford and Bettye returned to Sandflat, AL. Clifford served as a Hospice Chaplain with SouthernCare Hospice and was the VFW Post Commander of Post 5106. Cliff and Bettye attended Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville, AL. Following declining health, they moved to Delaware to be with family members where they attended Bethany Baptist Church in Wilmington.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 11:00 AM. A committal service with honors will be held at 1:00 PM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
